Review: Little Deaths by Emma Flint

Goodreads Blurb

Inspired by a true story, Little Deaths, like celebrated novels by Sarah Waters and Megan Abbott, is compelling literary crime fiction that explores the capacity for good and evil in us all.
It’s the summer of 1965, and the streets of Queens, New York shimmer in a heatwave. One July morning, Ruth Malone, a cocktail waitress, wakes to find a bedroom window wide open and her two young children missing. After a desperate search, the police make a horrifying discovery.
Separated from her husband, Ruth has been raising her children alone. Noting her perfectly made-up face and provocative clothing, the empty liquor bottles and love letters that litter her apartment, detectives leap to convenient conclusions fueled by neighborhood gossip and speculation. Covering the story as his first big assignment, tabloid reporter Pete Wonicke at first can’t help but do the same. But the longer he spends watching Ruth, the more he learns about the dark ways of cops and reporters, and the underbelly of the city he now calls home. As he fixates on Ruth, Pete soon begins to doubt everything he thought he knew.
Ruth Malone is enthralling, challenging, and secretive—is she really capable of murder? Haunting, intoxicating, and heart-poundingly suspenseful, Little Death is a gripping novel about love, morality, and obsession, exploring the capacity for good and evil within us all.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

A novel that will break everyone’s heart. Imagine checking up one morning thinking your two children are sleeping to only find that they are both missing. My heart broke in two finding out what happened to each child. Any parent would be freaking out and devastated that their children won’t be with them anymore. It was a tragic story that will challenge and confuse you of what exactly happened that July day. I was very disappointed with the outcome of this book. The person you least expect guilty was guilty as charge. This is a thriller with mystery. Your whole perspective in love and life will forever be changed.

Review: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes – The Ripper Legacy by David Stuart Davies

Goodreads Blurb

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson investigate the case of a kidnapped child. With no ransom note, and a sinister connection to the highest echelons of Victorian society, the companions’ lives are in danger. What is the child’s true heritage? And what is the connection with the vicious Whitechapel murders?

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

An exhilarating mystery solved by the one and only Holmes. A marvelous book with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. They work marvelously together to find a boy that was kidnapped. Holmes is an intelligent detective that with little evidence, he can deceiver the whereabouts of the kidnappers. The plot was very interesting and had me thinking who and why would take a child. Great book for any lovers of Sherlock Holmes.

Review: Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs

Goodreads Blurb

Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. The origins of the first ymbryne. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar—known to hide information about the peculiar world—first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series.

Riggs now invites you to share his secrets of peculiar history, with a collection of original stories, as collected and annotated by Millard Nullings, ward of Miss Peregrine and scholar of all things peculiar.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Ransom Riggs is unbelievably the best storyteller ever. Each story left the reader with a learning lesson. I was able to learn a lot from these stories even though they aren’t real. We as human tend to dislike others because they are different. At times, we are different, too, but still can’t accept others who are just as different in fear that you won’t be accepted. The first story with the cannibals was one in which money and luxuries were more important than living life like a normal human. We as humans can relate to all these stories one way or another. If our society was accepting, we could all live in a wonderful world where we all are treated the same even though we are all different. Please read this book because your horizon will broaden and will make you see that being peculiar isn’t any different in today’s world. But maybe we all can work together and make a difference.

Hi, I’m Ransom, and I like to tell stories. Sometimes I tell them with words, sometimes with pictures, often with both. I grew up on a farm on the Eastern shore of Maryland and also in a little house by the beach in Englewood, Florida where I got very tan and swam every day until I became half fish. I started writing stories when I was young, on an old typewriter that jammed and longhand on legal pads. When I was a little older I got a camera for Christmas and became obsessed with photography, and when I was a little older still my friends and I came into possession of a half-broken video camera and began to make our own movies, starring ourselves, using our bedrooms and backyards for sets. I have loved writing stories and taking photographs and making movies ever since, and have endeavored to do all three.

Review: Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

Goodreads Blurb

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth; she has charm and elegance. He’s a dedicated attorney who has never lost a case; she is a flawless homemaker, a masterful gardener and cook, and dotes on her disabled younger sister. Though they are still newlyweds, they seem to have it all. You might not want to like them, but you do. You’re hopelessly charmed by the ease and comfort of their home, by the graciousness of the dinner parties they throw. You’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are inseparable.

Some might call this true love. Others might wonder why Grace never answers the phone. Or why she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. Or why she never seems to take anything with her when she leaves the house, not even a pen. Or why there are such high-security metal shutters on all the downstairs windows.

Some might wonder what’s really going on once the dinner party is over, and the front door has closed.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

How well do you know people?? Once upon a time, a woman falls in love with the perfect man. He was loving and caring. She could only imagine what her wonderful perfect life was going to be. We all dream of having the best husband. But in the blink of an eye, the perfect husband was devious with a goal of torture and pain. This was the best 2016 thriller, which I read it in a matter of two days. I just couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. Grace made this story come to life. She was the strongest woman I could have ever imagined. To have to go through what she went through and complete her vengeance, it was brilliant. This was a book that gave all battered women a chance to be brave, and if there is a will, then there is a way to escape this torment. Jack ruled with fear, which exhilarated him, but Grace overruled with strength, protection, and courage. I absolutely recommend you read this heart pumping novel.

In the last epic clash, the slayers lost many of their crew and closest friends. But Frosty, the ice man himself, has not recovered from one casualty in particular—the love of his life, Kat Parker.

On the path to self-annihilation, Frosty receives a message from beyond—Kat’s spirit returns, insisting he partner with rogue slayer Camilla Marks. Frosty will do anything for Kat. Except that. Camilla is the one who betrayed them all, leading to Kat’s death.

But when Anima rises from the grave to become a force the slayers may not have the strength to overcome, Frosty, Camilla and all the slayers will have to work together to survive. And one broken slayer will learn that sometimes, the line between hate and attraction is blurred…and the road to redemption isn’t through revenge, but in letting go of the past and grabbing hold of the future.

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

I was a little disappointed with the fourth book in this series. It took me some time to get through the book. I didn’t grasp the story until halfway through the book. The first three books grabbed my attention from the very beginning. When I heard this book was coming out, I was so excited, but after reading it, I’m not so sure I was as excited. I was very happy with the ending and that Anima hopefully won’t come back. Good always prevails evil.
