Review: The Witch of New York by Alex Hortis

Goodreads Blurb

Before the sensational cases of Amanda Knox and Casey Anthony—before even Lizzie Borden—there was Polly Bodine, the first American woman put on trial for capital murder in our nation’s debut media circus.

On Christmas night, December 25, 1843, in a serene village on Staten Island, shocked neighbors discovered the burnt remains of twenty-four-year-old mother Emeline Houseman and her infant daughter, Ann Eliza. In a perverse nativity, someone bludgeoned to death a mother and child in their home—and then covered up the crime with hellfire.

When an ambitious district attorney charges Polly Bodine (Emelin’s sister-in-law) with a double homicide, the new “penny press” explodes. Polly is a perfect media villain: she’s a separated wife who drinks gin, commits adultery, and has had multiple abortions. Between June 1844 and April 1846, the nation was enthralled by her three trials—in Staten Island, Manhattan, and Newburgh—for the “Christmas murders.”

After Polly’s legal dream team entered the fray, the press and the public debated not only her guilt, but her character and fate as a fallen woman in society. Public opinion split into different camps over her case. Edgar Allen Poe and Walt Whitman covered her case as young newsmen. P. T. Barnum made a circus out of it. James Fenimore Cooper’s last novel was inspired by her trials.

The Witch of New York is the first narrative history about the dueling trial lawyers, ruthless newsmen, and shameless hucksters who turned the Polly Bodine case into America’s formative tabloid trial. An origin story of how America became addicted to sensationalized reporting of criminal trials, The Witch of New York vividly reconstructs an epic mystery from Old New York—and uses the Bodine case to challenge our system of tabloid justice of today.

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

The brutal murder of a young woman and her child will flip the lives of those living on Long Island on a Christmas night in 1843. The case against Polly Bodine will portray her as an evil witch who needs to get punished for the murders of her sister-in-law, Emeline Houseman, and her niece, Ann Eliza. Emeline and Ann were killed and burned in their home. It was a gruesome murder of two innocent lives. Can the court find Polly Bodine guilty of this heinous crime?

Polly’s trials will drag on for three and a half years and will be the talk of everyone who reads the newspaper or lives near where the court cases get held. The first case is in Long Island, but she has an unfair trial. Then, the case moves to Manhattan, where the newspapers will tarnish her reputation and create Polly as an evil witch, which will dissuade everyone in New York that she is guilty of the murders. A new trial will occur in Newburgh, where the jury will reach a decision.

Alex Hortis shared a story with which many people were unfamiliar. He researched the three trials thoroughly, providing readers with a glimpse into a trial that took place many years ago, was famous at the time, but got forgotten with time. I learned about this story when I saw Alex would be discussing the book at the exact location where the Newburgh trial took place. Sitting in the precise location where Polly Bodine stood trial made this rollercoaster case seem surreal. I was back to a moment in history. Organizing the book into four sections, naming each chapter, and providing dates when the events took place made the story easy to follow.

He provided detailed information about the court cases, Polly’s life, and the media frenzy that fueled the witch trial to portray Polly as guilty and a witch figure. In my opinion, Polly was guilty. Her running away when she found out about the murders, had written a mysterious letter to her lover, and was seen as the woman who sold Emeline’s property raised more questions than answers. You must read this epic trial to decide whether or not you find Polly guilty.

Author Biography

“[A] fascinating look at the crime and what came after…the reader is rewarded by the increasingly bonkers trials and their fallout.” -New York Times book review

“Hortis’s fastidious historical detail makes this episode come to life…. Fans of Daniel Stashower will love this.” -Publishers Weekly *STARRED* Review

This is the court house in Newburgh, where Polly’s final trial is held.

I Met Whoopi Goldberg

I got to meet @whoopigoldberg at @bookendsnj. I waited a long time to meet Whoopi. I remember when I was in middle school, I needed to write a biography essay. My love for Whoppi and her films led me to choose her life story. It was an epic moment to meet Whoopi and bond talking about fashion. Being able to bring someone a smile with an outfit is a feeling you will always take with you. Thanks, Whoppi, for being super cool!! #whoopigoldberg #bookevent #bookish #booktour #booklover #bookendsnj

I will be posting reviews from her two books soon.

She was loving my ladybug outfit theme. We both love two of the same shoe brands, Irregular Choice and Hot Chocolate Design.

Review: Bawb’s Raven Feathers Volume III by Robert Chomany

Goodreads Blurb

BawB’s Raven Feathers is pure and simple. It kickstarts moments of self-reflection and inner peace, drawing on nostalgia while pushing the reader to live in the present and dream of tomorrow. Alternating brief chapters of prose with perfectly rhythmic, adult rhymes, this book holds appeal for the masses.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Another amazing book that has inspired me and made me open my eyes and see mistakes I have done in order for me to be happy. We live our lives being unhappy and blaming others for our mishaps. There is so much more to life and being happy. If we open our hearts, minds, and listen, we can touch others and make them see that life is worth fighting for. I myself, on many occasions, have felt that I don’t have strength, belief, and positivity to be able to do more with my life. To find a job that will bring me joy and feel that I can do anything, even those things that others might not feel I can overcome. You don’t want to miss these wonderful novels.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Won this book in Goodreads. I love this book because it had amazing inspirational poems that open a person heart and soul to see that every day will be better if you are open to making it a better day. Smiling is contagious, and we should always smile at life, people, animals. I loved that the books had a space for us to write our feelings in regards to the topic that the author was talking about. I think it’s a great book for someone who needs to find their purpose and meaning. There are many people out there who live like robots. No change in what they eat, do, wear. Life is full of wonders. We must have an open mind and heart, and life is short, so we need to make the best of it. A smile in the wind to Robert. Thanks. I highly recommend this book.

Book Mail: The Sequel by Jean Hanff Korelitz

I couldn’t wait to receive an ARC copy of Jean Hanff Korelitz, who wrote The Plot, which had a twisted ending. The follow-up to her previous book is The Sequel. The book cover on the right is the book written by the character Anna Williams-Bonner. A review will follow when I’m done reading it.

Goodreads Blurb

Anna Williams-Bonner has taken care of business. That is to say, she’s taken care of her husband, bestselling novelist Jacob Finch Bonner, and laid to rest those anonymous accusations of plagiarism that so tormented him. Now she is living the contented life of a literary widow, enjoying her husband’s royalty checks in perpetuity, but for the second time in her life, a work of fiction intercedes, and this time it’s her own debut novel, The Afterword. After all, how hard can it really be to write a universally lauded bestseller?

But when Anna publishes her book and indulges in her own literary acclaim, she begins to receive excerpts of a novel she never expected to see again, a novel that should no longer exist. That it does means something has gone very wrong, and someone out there knows far too much: about her late brother, her late husband, and just possibly… Anna, herself. What does this person want and what are they prepared to do? She has come too far, and worked too hard, to lose what she values most: the sole and uncontested right to her own story. And she is, by any standard, a master storyteller.

With her signature wit and sardonic humor, Jean Hanff Korelitz gives readers an antihero to root for while illuminating and satirizing the world of publishing in this deliciously fun and suspenseful read.

Author Biography

Jean Hanff Korelitz is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels THE PLOT (The 2021 Tonight Show Summer Reads pick), YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN (adapted for HBO as “The Undoing” by David E. Kelley, and starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant and Donald Sutherland), ADMISSION (adapted as the 2013 film starring Tina Fey), THE DEVIL AND WEBSTER, THE WHITE ROSE, THE SABBATHDAY RIVER and A JURY OF HER PEERS. A new novel, THE LATECOMER, will be published on May 31st, 2022. Review: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

Goodreads Blurb

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors–until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.

Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This outstanding book brought me so much joy. It’s been a while since I devoured a book in three days, not allowing me to take a break from this heartwarming story. This book gave me all the emotions, with characters who stole my heart. Shelby created characters who made us want to know more about their stories. I learned early on how this story was going to unravel. I was happy with how the story turned out.

The leading character, Marcellus, who happens to be a giant Pacific octopus, makes the story interesting with his countdown to the end of his life. I was sad that, as the reader, you knew his death was imminent, but his smarts and skills will show the powers these beautiful creatures have. It was great learning more about the lifespan and abilities of an octopus.

This story is a rollercoaster of emotions. It follows a son who never knew his father, and his mom abandoned him. He searches for his possible father after locating a picture and a high school class ring. You have a seventy-year-old widow who had lost her husband and her son, who died a mysterious death when he was eighteen. This story beautifully weaves together these broken hearts who lost a lot but have so much to give to each other. Marcellus (the octopus) helps the characters figure out the mystery between these two lives, which brings new opportunities and locates what they lost. The characters’ growth and resilience throughout the story will leave you feeling hopeful.

I loved Tova Sullivan’s strength in pushing through the loss of her family and working hard at her age in the aquarium. His mother’s actions scarred Cameron Cassmore. He was a lost character trying to make it through the day in hopes of locating his happiness. I have a fascination for all sea creatures and was so happy I got to spend some quality time with Marcellus, the hero of this story. Marcellus days were outnumbered, but that didn’t stop him from making Tova realize who Cameron was to her. His friendship with Tova meant a lot to him. His memory of Erik, Tova’s son, made him want to bring Tova joy again. This is a magical story that will brighten your life.

Author Biography

Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel, REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES, will be published by Ecco/HarperCollins (US) and Bloomsbury (UK) in Spring 2022.

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, she’s now missing the mountains in the Chicago area with her husband and two children.

It is Christmas in July, a perfect time to read this book. So far, it is my favorite Pete the Cat book. I was so excited with the stickers. Pete, this time, was taken away from his warm weather at Key West to help Santa bring gifts to all the children. My favorite was the mini van being flown by the reindeer. It was epic. Pete the Cat, though small, was able to complete his task.

But Willa Fairchild is not the conniving woman he expects to find. Before he knows it, Willa-and her six-year-old son Scout-are stealing his heart. And that’s before he finds out Scout’s secret and the real reason this Christmas is so important.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

It is an outstanding romance that I will cherish forever. This was such a touching story with Willa and her son Scout. Their story tugged at my heart. Willa is a strong character who has gone through a lot with her son and her patients. Finn was upset that Willa took advantage of his poor father before he died because he left her fifty thousand dollars. Scout was a true hero in this story. He overcame cancer and was able to be himself and enjoy life as a kid. Willa and Finn both had a secret when they met, but love overcame the hurt and deception. A story you will need some tissues while reading.
