My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars
Jack Furey lived a full life with wonderful memories, but lets not forget the bad memories that he has kept locked in his mind for many years. Furey was a war hero and upstanding police sergeant. Furey is turning 100. I think most people look back and think about the life they lived the last 100 years. I would be lucky to live that long, but I might also wonder is this a punishment? Furey has a visit from an old friend, which takes Furey back to 1942, where he had so many situations happening in Wangamba that he needs to find the truth at whatever the cost. His duty is to protect Wangamba and make sure everyone is safe.
What I enjoyed about this book is that Mr. Lawless included so many real life issues. We can relate to the situations. His depictions of life in 1942, were on point. We have issues of race, abortions, prostitutions, murders and lets not forget Church and State. The book was written well with some humor when needed, an officer that knew what his job was and didn’t let anyone deter him for his duty. Furey is a family man and I was happy he wasn’t a dirty cop. He knew how to speak to people without having to knock the answers from people. I also enjoyed that Furey’s War really tells you this book doesn’t have a happy ending. I was blown away at how each case ended. People seek forgiveness for their terrible actions. Guilt eats people inside until they are swallowed in the darkness they created. Death is imminent when you are at war. Overall, it’s a wonderful detective book that shows the real struggles the police force face each day especially in times of war.
