Review: The Cat in the Box by Chris Ferrie

Goodreads Blurb

Finally, a simplified explanation of Schrodinger’s cat paradox for quantum mechanics enthusiasts!

Have you been lying awake at night pondering quantum superposition? Have you fretted about how to explain its flawed interpretation? Are you a fan of Schrodinger’s cat? Or do you know someone who is? This is the book for you!

Award-winning physicist, quantum enthusiast and bestselling author of the Baby University series Chris Ferrie, has transformed Schrodinger’s paradox into a whimsical poem perfect for science fans or anyone who enjoys using cats and boxes to explain science experiments.

My Review: Rated 3 out of 5 stars

I must start by saying Math is my worst subject and I never took Physics. Probably the worst person to understand this book. I was hoping to learn something, but I was more confused at the end then I was at the beginning of this book. I was glad for the brief bio on Mr. Schrodinger, since I had no idea who he was. I think the illustrations were fun. The story was written in verse form that might have made it a little more complex to understand. I don’t feel like this story will be understood by children. Quantum theory left be stumped and clueless just like Schrodinger. I must stick to what I know.

Author Biography

Chris Ferrie is a physicist, mathematician and father of four budding young scientists. He obtained his doctorate in Mathematical Physics from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada and is currently a faculty member at the Centre for Quantum Software and Information in Syndey, Australia. Chris believes it is never too early to introduce children to the wild and wonderful world of science!

Review: Isabella: Girl in Charge by Jennifer Fosberry, Illustrations by Mike Litwin

Goodreads Blurb

Plucky, purple-haired Isabella, star of the New York Times bestselling picture book series, is back for another adventure!

Just how high can a little girl dream?

A big event has Isabella ready to leave home at the crack of dawn. But that’s a motion her parents are not likely to pass. After a two-to-one vote, it’s decided that some things need to happen before Isabella can leave the house—like eating breakfast and brushing her teeth!

If her house is going to work like a democracy, Isabella knows what she has to do; call an assembly and campaign her way out the door!

Taking inspiration from the women who trail blazed their way onto the political map of America, Isabella celebrates the women who were first to hold their offices. And if Isabella can get her parents out the door, she might just witness the first woman voted into the highest position of all…

My Review 3 out of 5 Stars

The right to vote should be everyone’s right, regardless of gender. I am very proud to say that I have the right to vote and have my voice heard, because of the many women who fought for the right to vote, while putting themselves in danger, in order for all women to have the right to vote.

Isabella is super adorable and she changes her name and her outfits to resemble the many leading ladies in politics. The illustrations are adorable. What I think was lacking from this book is that most children wouldn’t know who the first female, major or governor is by just using the first name of the lady. The book doesn’t detail who these fabulous ladies are during the story. At the end of the book it does give a background description of these outstanding ladies and a timeline.

I’m not quite sure younger children will understand the story. I loved that at the end Isabella want was going to the Capital to see a woman be named as president. I hope I get to see this in my lifetime. Women in politics continue to push boundaries and I hope that the world can see that a woman can lead a whole country.

Goodreads Blurb

In the town of Silver Bells, there’s always a feeling of Christmas in the air… Let love—and RaeAnne Thayne—melt your heart this holiday season!

This New Year will bring widowed nurse Abigail Powell a fresh start in a different city. Excited about the chance to create an unforgettable Christmas for her young son in picturesque Silver Bells, Colorado, Abby has been hired to take care of her dear friend’s recuperating grandmother. But sprightly senior Winnie insists she doesn’t need looking after. What she does need is help decorating her historic mansion, Holiday House, for a seasonal town fundraiser. Abby warms to the festive task, but she’ll have to contend with her own personal Grinch: Winnie’s prickly grandson, Ethan Lancaster.

Ethan Lancaster is good at a lot of things. Relationships surely aren’t one of them. His ex-fiancée convinced Ethan he was incapable of love, and he believes her…up until the moment he impulsively kisses Abby. What is it about this vibrant woman and her sweet son that knocks his world off-kilter? He knows they’re leaving town after Christmas. He just didn’t expect they’d be taking a little of his heart with them. But as he and Abby work together on the magical Holiday House through the record cold weather, visions of a different future dance in his head…one filled with warmth, love and a new beginning for them both.

Author Biography

RaeAnne Thayne

I’m not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.

Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.

After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.

Through it all — through the natural progression of my career from reporter to editor — I wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.

I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to try — their stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 30 books later, I’ve come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the “that’s-it!” feeling I get when a story is flowing.

I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.

Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply can’t imagine my life any other way.

I love to hear from readers. You can reach me at my email address, raeannethayne@gmail.com

(Brooklyn Brothers, #3)

We are the Rossetti’s.
The exiled “sixth family” of the New York mafia. We’re the good guys.
People don’t fear us…much. They respect us.
The five of us? We’re the Brooklyn Brothers.
And we protect what’s ours.

Lexi Kozlov is a spoiled brat. Rich. Entitled. And unfortunately, she’s now my wife. The marriage is part of a deal I struck with her father…the boss of the Russian mafia. Insane? Maybe. But the payoff could mean millions for my family. Marriage is just a contract anyway. We barely even have to speak to each other. Piece of cake, right?

Wrong.

Lexi is not what I bargained for. Her millions of Instagram followers see her as an international sex symbol, but I’m learning that she’s so much more. I should be relieved that she’s the bachelorette to my bachelor. I shouldn’t want to convince her to turn our fake marriage into a real one.

But when her life is threatened, you better believe I’m going to protect my wife, contract or no contract. Because this sham marriage is the most real thing I’ve ever had in my life.

And I’m not about to let anyone take that away from me.

Review: Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog by Lisa Papp

Goodreads Blurb

Madeline Finn and Star are back–and now Star is old enough to become a therapy dog. Will our beloved team be able to pass the test?

Madeline Finn and Star are off to Walker Oaks, a retirement community where Star will take his tests to become a therapy dog. Accompanied by Mom, Mrs. Dimple, and Bonnie, she and Star make their way through a variety of challenges and meet several new friends. But Madeline Finn can’t stop thinking about an elderly man in a wheelchair who never smiles. Is there something she and Star can do to help?

A companion to the Lisa Papp’s best-selling books Madeline Finn and the Library Dog and Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog, this heartwarming story explores the therapy dog training process and provides a realistic and appealing example of a young person making a difference in her community.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

What an adorable story. Madeline Finn is training her gorgeous dog Star to be a certified therapy dog. She was very determined, patient, caring and worked very hard with Star to make sure he will receive his tag. Madeline and Star had everyone at Walter Oaks, which is a retirement community, very happy that Star was there to keep them company. Madeline and Star had to work a little harder with Mr. Humphrey who wouldn’t speak to them or pay any attention to Star. Madeline is young but a brilliant young lady. She was patient and thought of many ideas that might make Mr. Humphrey happy and she was such a success. Madeline and Star are the perfect team that passed the test. This is a brilliant book to teach children discipline, determination, to think outside the box and to never give up. Great illustrations with a touching story.

Author Biography

MADELINE FINN AND THE LIBRARY DOG is the 2017 CBC Children’s Choice Award Winner in the K – 2 Book of the Year category.

Madeline Finn comes straight from the heart.

I am continually inspired by these amazing Therapy Dogs and their handlers. They let me tag along for the better part of a year where I witnessed one magical moment after the next. Many of the dogs featured in the book are former shelter dogs, now living a new life helping children, and I’m proud to say this book continues to raise money for these wonderful programs.

Everyone knows dogs are masters at unconditional love. When a child senses they are accepted exactly as they are, their fears drop away. Doors open. It’s tough to put into words the beautiful bond between the animals and children. I hope this story shares a little bit of that magic.

MADELINE FINN AND THE LIBRARY DOG is a 2016 Parent’s Choice Award Recommended book, a 2017 Children’s Book Council Children’s Choice Award Winner, and has been translated into 21 languages. Lisa Papp won the 2012 Storytelling Award, and a 2011 NAPPA Honor Award for The Town that Fooled the British, illustrated by her husband, Robert. Some of her favorite writers are L.M. Montgomery, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Sally Gardner. Illustrators she adores are Lisbeth Zwerger, Rien Poortvliet, and, of course, Robert Papp. She and her husband live in eastern Pennsylvania with their three wildly creative cats.
