Review: Brother & Sister by Diane Keaton

Goodreads Blurb

From the beloved film star and best-selling author of Then Again: a heartfelt memoir about her relationship with her younger brother, and a poignant exploration of the divergent paths siblings’ lives can take.

When they were children in the suburbs of Los Angeles in the 1950s, Diane Keaton and her younger brother, Randy, were best friends and companions: they shared stories at night in their bunk beds; they swam, laughed, dressed up for Halloween. Their mother captured their American-dream childhoods in her diaries, and on camera. But as they grew up, Randy became troubled, then reclusive. By the time he reached adulthood, he was divorced, an alcoholic, a man who couldn’t hold on to full-time work–his life a world away from his sister’s, and from the rest of their family.

Now Diane is delving into the nuances of their shared, and separate, pasts to confront the difficult question of why and how Randy ended up living his life on “the other side of normal.” In beautiful and fearless prose that’s intertwined with photographs, journal entries, letters, and poetry–many of them Randy’s own writing and art–this insightful memoir contemplates the inner workings of a family, the ties that hold it together, and the special bond between siblings even when they are pulled far apart. Here is a story about love and responsibility: about how, when we choose to reach out to the people we feel closest to–in moments of difficulty and loss–surprising things can happen. A story with universal echoes, Brother & Sister will speak across generations to families whose lives have been touched by the fragility and “otherness” of loved ones–and to brothers and sisters everywhere.

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Diane wrote a biography that share’s her brother Randy’s struggle throughout his life. Randy and Diane were very close when they were little. He had always been a recluse and as time went by he couldn’t find a way to fit in. She wrote this novel with letters from family, journal entries, poems from Randy and pictures of Randy’s life. Randy was a an amazing writer and poet. He found peace in writing and creating his picture collages.

His poetry was raw and vivid. He wrote dark thoughts and feelings that he didn’t know how to share with others. His brilliant mind kept him a prisoner his whole life. This novel will break your heart. You can see the love of a mother who wanted to protect Randy from everything around him. The love around him wasn’t enough for him to live a normal life. Alcoholism with his mental health issues created a dark man with no care in the world. You can’t help those who don’t want to be helped. I wish Randy was able to find the proper treatment and find peace within his mind, body and soul. Wishing him peace for the rest of his life to him and his family.

Goodreads Blurb

Just because you love someone doesn’t mean you know them.

Nina Garrity learned that the hard way after discovering that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. But Glen’s gone–presumably drowned while fishing on his boat–so she can’t confront him about the affair or any of his other misdeeds. A year and a half after the accident, Nina considers herself a widow, even though the police never found a body. Following a chance encounter with Simon Fitch, a teacher from her daughter Maggie’s middle school, Nina finds love again and has hopes of putting her shattered life back together.

Simon, a widower still grieving the suicide of his first wife, has found his dream girl in Nina. His charm and affections help break through to a heart hardened by betrayal. Nina’s teenage son, Connor, embraces Simon as the father he wishes his dad could have been, but Maggie sees a far darker side to this new man in their lives. Even Nina’s good friends wonder if Simon is supremely devoted–or dangerously possessive.

But Nina is committed, not only to her soon-to-be new husband but also to resuming her former career as a social worker. Before she can move forward, however, Nina must first clear her conscience that she’s not making another terrible choice in a man. In doing so, she will uncover the shocking truth: the greatest danger to her, and her children, are the lies people tell themselves.

Review: Kindred A Graphic Novel Adaption by Octavia E. Butler

Goodreads Blurb

I lost an arm on my last trip home.

Home is a new house with a loving husband in 1970s California that suddenly transformed in to the frightening world of the antebellum South.

Dana, a young black writer, can’t explain how she is transported across time and space to a plantation in Maryland. But she does quickly understand why: to deal with the troubles of Rufus, a conflicted white slaveholder–and her progenitor.

Her survival, her very existence, depends on it.

This searing graphic-novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction classic is a powerfully moving, unflinching look at the violent disturbing effects of slavery on the people it chained together, both black and white–and made kindred in the deepest sense of the word.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

A powerful novel that will take the reader back into the 1800’s, where they will experience the cruelty African Americans went through because of slavery. Dana was a super hero in this story. With some unknown power she was able to time travel to the 1800’s to save Rufus who happens to be her ancestor. Unfortunately, saving his life the numerous times will cost Dana. Dana being from another time-frame, a writer and a fighter was brutally beaten, while all she wanted to do is help people. My heart broke seeing Dana and the others brutally beaten and mistreated. This book is so intense you can almost hear the whip slap against the skin, the weeping and crying I cannot possibly imagine seeing such brutality and not being able to do anything. Octavia gave us a visual of first hand visual of the cruelty slavery was. She didn’t sugarcoat anything. She wanted the readers to live through this terrify brutality. I can’t believe slavery was okay so many years ago. I recommend you read this book so that history doesn’t repeat itself.
