(Hickville High Series, #4)
Publication date: May 15th 2020
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Frasier Anderson is one of the hottest teenage actors in the UK, but he’s virtually unknown in the US. Now he’s landed the leading role in a big-budget Hollywood film that could make him an international star.

So how do you prepare a Scot for a role as a Texas high school student? Give him a fake name, a fake accent, and embed him in a Texas high school. He only has to follow three rules:

No drama. No girls. And no telling who he really is.

Jenna Wiley is smart, funny, and has a few no-drama, no-dating rules of her own. Her friendship with new kid Ethan Smith is perfect and might even lead to something more. Except for a few things that don’t add up. Like his mom being afraid to have company. Or their house, which is more staged than lived in. Or his sister, whom nobody talks about.

It all comes to a boil when Frasier’s biggest secrets hit the tabloids and the paparazzi swarm Hillside with Jenna in their sights.

Can Frasier convince Jenna that shy, goofy Ethan Smith is closer to real than the image the tabloids have created?

And can she ever forgive him for breaking the most important rule of all? Because for Jenna, when it comes to love and science, the truth is all that matters.

Author Biography

Mary Karlik has always been a dreamer. When she was a teen, she read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and then sat in every wardrobe in her Nanna’s home, trying to open the door to Narnia. She didn’t find it, but she did discover her voice as an author: one filled with her young adult self, and grounded in her roots as a Texan and her Scottish heritage, nourished by obscure Scottish folklore.
You can find her Texas roots in her YA contemporary romance Hickville series , which has been described as “100% solid storytelling,” and begins with Welcome to Hickville High, a “lovely story about growing up.”
She digs deep into her Scottish roots – there is magic there, she just knows it – for the forthcoming YA epic fantasy Fairy Trafficking series, beginning with Magic Harvest.
She makes her home in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains of Northern New Mexico where she is a certified professional ski instructor, but she also loves visiting Scotland where she is currently studying Scottish Gaelic at the University of Highlands and Islands in Skye. Mary also earned her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University, has a B.S. degree from Texas A&M University, and is a Registered Nurse.
Mary currently serves as the President of the Young Adult Chapter of Romance Writers of America and looks forward to raising a glass or two of gin and tonic with her fellow writers every year at RWA’s national convention.

Author Biography

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

Review: American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

Goodreads Blurb

También de este lado hay sueños. On this side, too, there are dreams.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy—two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Forced to flee, Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia—trains that make their way north toward the United States, which is the only place Javier’s reach doesn’t extend. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This book has caused a huge controversy for many reasons. I choose to share my review about the story without stating anything about the topic of why it has everyone on an uproar.

Overall, I felt the story grasped my attention from the very first chapter. Author provides such deep descriptions that it makes you feel the terror, panic, massacres and the unsafe and unknown travel, to hope you can escape the nightmare, in hopes of freedom. Sometimes you don’t know that a friendship can be a curse at the same time. Lydia and her son Luca had to walk through hell and back in order to find peace and a second chance at life. The unexpected unknown while being followed, had me terrified for each character. You get so attached to the characters because they all seek refuge and safety. They all have a story so similar to each other. They all needed to fight and be strong in order to survive. The author wrote a story that will leave you at the edge of your seat with people jumping on top of trains, running from migration, cartels and also evil people who are looking to rob you and take everything from you. This was a tough story to read with so many paralyzing moments that I could never ever imagine wanting to endure or see anyone else live through in search of a better life.

Author Biography

I can usually be found in my home office – either writing, reading or burrowing down several rabbit holes on the internet under the guise of doing research!

The idea of writing a book took seed during my twenties, but between getting married, emigrating and raising children, the closest I got to writing was joining book clubs and attending writing courses. Finally, in my forties, I co-founded the Romance writers of South Africa (ROSA) with Romy Sommer and that’s where the dream to write has finally become a reality.

I write sizzling romantic suspense novels, and love delving into worlds I know nothing about … hence the research!

When not glued to my Kindle, reading the latest steamy novel, I spend my time catching up with dear friends, going to the movies and planning the next building project at home. My poor husband!

Born and bred in Holland to a Dutch father and an English mother, I have lived in three different continents. I’m currently living in sunny South Africa with my ever-patient husband and two grown children who I hope will stick around the house just a little bit longer!

Review: The Particular Charm of Miss Jane Austen by Ada Bright and Cass Grafton

Goodreads Review

When a time travelling Jane Austen gets stuck in modern-day Bath it’s up to avid Janeite Rose Wallace to save her… because she’s the only one who knows that Jane exists!

Rose Wallace’s world revolves around all things Austen, and with the annual festival in Bath – and the arrival of dishy archaeologist, Dr Aiden Trevellyan – just around the corner, all is well with the world…

But then a mysterious woman who bears more than a passing resemblance to the great author moves in upstairs, and things take a disastrous turn. Rose’s new neighbour is Jane Austen, whose time travel adventure has been sabotaged by a mischievous dog, trapping her in the twenty-first century.

Rose’s life is instantly changed – new home, new job, new friends – but she’s the only one who seems to have noticed! To right the world around her, she will have to do whatever it takes to help Jane get back home to write Rose’s beloved novels. Because a world without Mr Darcy? It’s not worth living in!

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Such a charming story that gives us the possibility of meeting Jane Austen someday. The thought of being able to time travel with the iconic Jane Austen is truly amazing. She is an idol to so many people, me being one of them. Pride and Prejudice being my favorite novel.
I loved the characters in this story. Morgan being from the US was so much fun. Rose and Morgan were the perfect friends. They were always looking out for each other, which reminding me of the bond between Jane and her sister Cassandra. Their bond was so close their whole life it portrays beautifully on the characters of Morgan and Rose, plus Jane and her interaction with her sister in the past. This story couldn’t run short of romance. Dr. Aiden and James were the perfect guys that you would find in a Austen novel. They were both dreamy, smart, shy but with hidden feelings.
If you love Jane Austen and you want to re-live the Jane Austen Festival, then this book has all those amazing events, costumes, plus meeting Jane Austen and getting lost in another century with her. You will get a little stress with the possibility of not ever having those amazing novels we all have loved, but will you be happily surprised at the quick actions these characters have. This has a continuation so more Jane Austen adventures.

Author Biography from https://tabbycow.com/about/

We are two friends who love to write together!

HP Day
Pasadena – 2005

One of us has lived in California all her life, and the other has lived in three different countries, and our paths would never have crossed if it hadn’t been for a certain boy wizard (thank you J.K. Rowling)!

We’d both been dabbling in writing all our lives, but after we met in 2002 on a Harry Potter forum, it didn’t take long for us to decide we’d love to try our hands at co-writing some fan fiction together – and soon after, we realised we had something special – to us, at least – totally contrasting writing styles and methods which somehow, for some reason, just gelled!

Disapparating from Harry’s world into Regency England, we dabbled with co-writing Austen-inspired fan fiction for a while before real life left us little time (or coherent brain power) for writing.

In early 2015, we picked up our virtual pens again, however, and after a crazy, hilarious and ultimately rewarding few years, we’re finally ready to share the fruits of our labour in a series of uplifting, comedic tales of time travel, love and friendship.

The eBook of The Particular Charm of Miss Jane Austen was published by Canelo Digital Publishing on 12th September 2019, and the sequel follows on 7th November.

The Particular Charm of Miss Jane Austen is also available in paperback.

We hope you will enjoy reading our stories as much as we enjoy writing them!

Book 2 Review to follow soon
