The Unqualified Hostess: I Do It My Way So You Can Too! by Whoopi Goldberg

Goodreads Blurb

The legendary actor and comedian shows how to set a great table, shares ideas for unforgettable celebrations, and says, “It’s about fun, not perfection!” In her own words…

“It’s Whoopi here and I’ve written this book that, frankly, is the last book anyone would expect. You would never think of me as someone with the courage to say, ‘You have everything you need to be fantastic in your own house, apartment, or trailer to set a great table.’

Let’s face it, you look at a lot of books on Entertaining and think ‘I could never do this in my house, I don’t have this stuff and it’s not going to look like what I’m seeing.’ That’s not what’s going to happen here! I want to show you there is great heart in setting the table. For two or four or the kids or Halloween or tea just for you. For dinners with friends or the holidays. I’m going to tell you stories about what I do when people come over and give you ideas about what you’re seeing because Honey, everything in this book is what you can do in your house.

You got a bodega or a 7-Eleven near you? They sell flowers. Take those bad boys and put them on your table. You got some crazy old plate from your grandmother (or a fancy silver one)? You got little kids’ toys that have been annoying you forever, put them on the table too. Who’s going to tell you it’s wrong? Not me! I’m going to tell you it’s right and I’m going to take you on a journey. And don’t forget the bathroom; decorate it too, people are going to see it. It’s all at your house. Come with me. I’ll show you!

P.S. I know the glass on the cover is broken. Accidents happen!”

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Whoopi, I so want to be your guest. You have always been my idol. To see that we share the love of decorating and being creative makes me so happy. We also share the love of shoes, Irregular Choice shoes being one of our favorites.

I mean who wouldn’t want to have tea with trolls, which are my favorite toys. This book is a quick read. I never expected Whoopi Goldberg making such fun tables for her family and friends. I was happy to see that I can add anything I want on my table that I love, with no boundaries. I got some pretty awesome ideas that I can do with my table and chairs. Thanks for bringing everyone happiness with your unique table ideas.

It’s Always The Husband by Michele Campbell

Goodreads Blurb

Kate, Aubrey, and Jenny. They first met as college roommates and soon became inseparable, even though they are as different as three women can be. Twenty years later, one of them is standing at the edge of a bridge . . and someone else is urging her to jump.

How did things come to this?

As the novel cuts back and forth between their college years and their adult years, you see the exact reasons why these women love and hate each other—but can feelings that strong lead to murder? Or will everyone assume, as is often the case, that it’s always the husband?

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars

I’m speechless. What a messed up story of friendship gone haywire, love, deceit, cover ups and secrets. I couldn’t stand Kate. She annoyed me as much as she annoyed her friends. Unfortunately, what comes around goes around. Kate lived her life like she was a princess, not thinking her actions will ever come back to haunt her. An innocent death covered up by money, left many skeletons in the closet. People sure get away with things, but guilt will always haunt you.

Alejandro’s Sorceress (Cardinal Witches #1) by Alyssa Day

Goodreads Blurb

Initial release to be in the anthology, Dark and Deadly, with release as a separate ebook tentatively scheduled for May 2014.

He’s a warrior, hardened by years of protecting his town from vampire attack. She’s a garden witch who sees the world in shades of sunshine and delight. Opposites don’t only attract, they go supernova in this sizzling tale of magic and mayhem.

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

This was a short funny paranormal romance. Alejandro was just as sexy as his name. Alejandro is a warrior fighting against vampires and Rose is a garden witch. Love was found in such odd occasion.

Christmas in Paris by Anita Hughes

Goodreads Blurb

Hughes will fill your heart with the sights, sounds, and flavors of new love, glamorous fashion, and decadent holiday cuisine.

Isabel Lawson is standing on the balcony of her suite at the Hotel Crillon as she gazes at the twinkling lights of the Champs Elysee and wonders if she’s made a terrible mistake. She was supposed to be visiting the Christmas tree in the Place de la Concorde, and eating escargots and macaroons with her new husband on their honeymoon. But a week before the wedding, she called it off. Isabel is an ambitious Philadelphia finance woman, and Neil suddenly decided to take over his grandparents’ farm. Isabel wasn’t ready to trade her briefcase for a pair of rubber boots and a saddle.

When Neil suggested she use their honeymoon tickets for herself, she thought it would give her a chance to clear her head. That is until she locks herself out on the balcony in the middle of winter. Thankfully her neighbor Alec, a French children’s illustrator, comes to her rescue. He too is nursing a broken heart at the Crillon for the holidays. With a new friend by her side, Isabel is determined to use her time in the city of lights wisely. After a chance encounter with a fortune teller and a close call with a taxi, she starts to question everything she thought was important.

Christmas in Paris is a moving and heartwarming story about love, trust, and self-discovery. Set during the most magical week of the year, the glorious foods and fashions of the most romantic city in the world are sure to take your breath away.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

Finding love in Paris, has just gotten better. Isabel and and Alec were both broken hearted. Were engage to be married in a matter of days, but cupid left them both stranded in Paris without any love. Sometimes love is right in front of you and you don’t realize that it’s there. Isabel was obsessed with what a fortune teller told her about her future. She truly annoyed me with not seeing that she was happier with Alec then with anyone else. Love at first site does truly exist. Just need to keep an open mind and don’t work to hard to find love.

The Forever Christmas Tree (Bell Sound #1) by Sandra Hill

Goodreads Blurb

The Christmas bells are chiming across the Outer Banks town of Bell Cove, North Carolina, but there’s one local ‘grinch’ who’s not listening . . .

He’s got bad-boy looks and a Bah Humbug attitude, so when the local paper asks the villagers to vote on the “Biggest Local Grinch” as a fund-raising project, Ethan Rutledge isn’t surprised to hear he’s made the ballot. He might own the local Christmas Tree Farm, but the holiday hasn’t been welcome in his home since Wendy Patterson left him heart-broken twelve years ago.

But now Wendy’s back, fresh from a tour of duty as a female Navy SEAL. She’s bold, beautiful, and has five Navy buddies trailing after her—as if she needs a bodyguard! And what’s all this about them wanting to start a treasure hunting company right here in Bell Cove’s failing bell factory? Then Wendy learns about how Ethan’s been nurturing the one thing he has to remember her by: a gorgeous Norway Spruce tree.

Can the magic of Christmas and the spirit of the town help rekindle the romance between two people who thought they’d left love behind years ago?

My Review: Rated 4 out 5 stars

A wonderful Christmas romance with a Grinch contest. That was a fun idea. I loved that a fundraiser turned out to be a fun filled event. Everyone in Bell Cove joined in and dressed up for the cause. Love is everlasting, even when you thought it ended. Wendy and Ethan were sweethearts for many years. A mistake got in the way of their happiness. 12 years later, Wendy comes back to find out Ethan didn’t become a Veterinarian like he wished to be. Wendy’s life didn’t turn out like she wanted neither. She didn’t end up a doctor like her father, but became a Navy SEAL. This book really brought the whole Bell Cove town together as a family and love persevered. Christmas is a time to reflect, enjoy, have fun, spend time with love ones. I can’t forget the hot SEAL’s in this novel. Who can resist, I sure can’t! Great read for Christmas!

First Day of Christmas Con

Christmas Con made my reality of experiencing Christmas with all the joys, excitement, happiness and traditions, come true. The evening started off with Jonathan Bennett and Lacey Chabert together with Christmas carolers and the one and only Santa Claus, we all counted down to light the first ever tree for Christmas Con. The unity of everyone at that moment is truly unforgettable. The lights twinkling, the snow blower snowing all over the tree and everyone singing Christmas songs, was a magical moment that I will never forget. I got the experience I was hoping to get at this amazing event. They had a small market with wonderful shops to buy some delicious sweets or buy some gifts. We had fun doing Christmas trivia and others got to meet the celebrity that were at the event that evening.

Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber

Goodreads Blurb

Debbie Macomber brings us to the Alaskan wilderness for a magical Christmas tale about finding love where it’s least expected.

Before beginning her dream job as sous chef in one of Seattle’s hottest new restaurants, Josie Avery takes a summer position cooking at a lakeside lodge in the remote Alaskan town of Ponder. Josie falls for the rustic charms of the local community–including Jack Corcoran, the crotchety keeper of Ponder’s famed sourdough starter, and, in particular, the quiet and intense Palmer Saxon, a famed master swordsmith.

Josie and Palmer become close during the long Alaskan summer days, but Josie knows that, come fall, she’ll be returning to reality and the career she’s worked so hard for. Palmer, on the other hand, would like nothing better than to make Josie his wife and to keep her in Ponder. But Josie can’t imagine abandoning her mother back in the Emerald City and sacrificing her career to stay in this isolated town–not even for a man she’s quickly coming to love.

Fate has other plans. Josie misses the last boat out of town before winter sets in, stranding her in Ponder and putting her dream job at risk. As the holidays approach, Josie and Palmer must grapple with the complications that arise when dreams confront reality, and the Christmas magic that can happen when they put their faith in love.

Debbie Macomber is at her best in this beautiful holiday story about the far journeys we travel to find a place to call home.

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

A fun filled romance with interesting characters. I loved the idea of having this book take place in Alaska during Christmas. Josie was the perfect chef that everyone adored. Palmer was the sexy Alaskan rugged stud. Great with his hands and a fan of Josie. Jack made this story so fun. Jack was hungry every minute in this book. He dreamed about eating all the time. Location sometimes might be a bummer or careers might get in the way, but true love always ends with a wedding. Perfect novel for a Hallmark Christmas movie.
