So many people don’t understand mental illness. They think that sadness and clinical depression, or nervousness and clinical anxiety, are the same things. Well-meaning people say things like, “Suck it up,” and “Overcome,” and “Choose to be happy.” Or, “Focus on your blessings,” and “Put a smile on that face.” I’ve even said things like that–before I came to understand.

Mental Health.png

And so many people feel alone and misunderstood and have given up on fighting their mental illness. They need to know about resources. They need to know to keep searching for the right meds or the right doc. In this modern day, there is no reason why anyone should be living a life of despair or debilitating anxiety. Sometimes mental illness is the root cause–a chemical imbalance. And sometimes it’s something else, like a weak thyroid. But for some reason, many people think of mental illness as a personal weakness rather than as an illness like high blood pressure or cancer.

Little Comfort by Edwin Hill

Goodreads Blurb

Harvard librarian Hester Thursby knows that even in the digital age, people still need help finding things. Using her research skills, Hester runs a side business tracking down the lost. Usually, she’s hired to find long-ago prom dates or to reunite adopted children and birth parents. Her new case is finding the handsome and charismatic Sam Blaine.

Sam has no desire to be found. As a teenager, he fled his small New Hampshire town with his friend, Gabe, after a haunting incident. For a dozen years, Sam and Gabe have traveled the country, reinventing themselves as they move from one mark to another. Sam has learned how trusting wealthy people can be—especially the lonely ones—as he expertly manipulates his way into their lives and homes. In Wendy Richards, the beautiful, fabulously rich daughter of one of Boston’s most influential families, he’s found the perfect way to infiltrate the milieu in which he knows he belongs—a world of Brooks Brothers suits, Nantucket summers, and effortless glamour.

As Hester’s investigation closes in on their brutal truth, the bond between Sam and Gabe is tested and Hester unknowingly jeopardizes her own safety. While Gabe has pinned all his desperate hopes of a normal life on Hester, Sam wants her out of the way for good. And Gabe has always done what Sam asks..

My Review , 4 out of 5 stars

A brilliant story that will have you thinking until the very end. Edwin gave us a story that slowly unraveled on what exactly Hester was going up against? The characters will have you screaming for more. I loved that the story didn’t give you a lot of information on the reason for finding both Gabe and Sam. The story slowly gave you a little more with the postcards from Sam to Lila his sister. They were beautifully thought out on the images and the movie quotes. Loved how Hester solved that mystery. Hester was such a super woman. She might be tiny and have a little girl name Kate under her care and a dog named Waffles, who doesn’t love waffles? But she truly knew how to kick ass. She went into danger even with a little girl, but she fought her way out of it. I felt terrible for Gabe, such a lonely soul that was constantly being used and abused. I wish he had more of a back bone and seen the terrible things he and Sam did were unforgiving. Sam only thought of himself and the power and status he longed for no matter the cost. This book will leave you with chills, fear, and fright on what will happen next? Serial killers come in many forms. The person who you least expect will be that person you should fear the most.  If you are looking for a mystery with hidden secrets, change of identity, and status seeking serial killers, then look no further.

Author Biography

Edwin Hill is the author of the critically-acclaimed Hester Thursby mystery series. His first novel, Little Comfort, was nominated for an Agatha Award for best debut. The second in the series, The Missing Ones, will be available in September of 2019.

Visit his website for more information.

(A note from the author on rating other writers: I used to be more critical of writers’ work but these days only rate books that I’ve read and liked, and mostly give fives. Once in a while, I’ll throw in a four to a well-established author whose earlier work was even better than their current work. Anything below a four, I keep to myself.)

Candace Bushnell Book Signing

Candace and me
Me and Candace Bookcon 2015

I was super excited to meet Candace again. Sex in the City is one of my favorite shows. The first Sex in the City movie is my favorite, I have watched it so many times that I can tell you word for word each thing the characters say. Check out her new release Is There Still Sex In The City.

Goodreads Blurb

Twenty years after her sharp, seminal first book Sex and the City reshaped the landscape of pop culture and dating with its fly on the wall look at the mating rituals of the Manhattan elite, the trailblazing Candace Bushnell delivers a new book on the wilds and lows of sex and dating after fifty.

Set between the Upper East Side of Manhattan and a country enclave known as The Village, Is There Still Sex in the City? gathers Bushnell’s signature short, sharp, satirical commentaries on the love and dating habits of middle aged men and women as they continue to navigate the ever-modernizing world of relationships. Throughout, Bushnell documents 21st century dating phenomenon, such as the “Unintended Cub Situation” in which a sensible older woman suddenly becomes the love interest of a much younger man, the “Mona Lisa” Treatment—a vaginal restorative surgery often recommended to middle aged women, and what it’s really like to go on Tinder dates as a fifty something divorcee. Bushnell also updates one of her most celebrated stories from Sex and the City, “The Bicycle Boys,” a breed of New York man who was always trying to bring his bike up to women’s apartments. Once an anomaly, Bushnell charts their new ubiquitousness, in addition to where, and how to do your own man stalking via bicycle (and whether or not it’s worth it).

In Is There Still Sex in The City? Bushnell looks at love and life from all angles—marriage and children, divorce and bereavement, as well as the very real pressures on women to maintain their youth and have it all. This is a pull-no-punches social commentary and an indispensable companion to one of the most revolutionary dating books of the twentieth century.

Where Privacy Dies by Priscilla Paton

Goodreads Blurb

An executive’s corpse is discovered in a Minneapolis wetland, and with it the photo of a girl. Is she unconscious or dead? Detective Erik Jansson takes on the investigation and is mismatched with a new partner, the imposing Detective Deb Metzger. They soon learn that the murdered man worked for a reputation management firm that serves wealthy clients. Other employees from the firm have also vanished, but information is withheld from the detectives by a corporate cover-up.

Erik and Deb pursue promising leads about the identity of the photo girl. When these leads take them to a down-and-out family and a Northwoods cabin, they seem to be dead-ends–or are they?

Despite informants who lie, the online targeting of another girl, and threats to their own safety, Erik and Deb delve deeper. The story becomes stranger and more unsavory as intensely private and deadly secrets come to light.

My Review : Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This story had a great plot. I felt like the story was slow. I was hoping to have some action and thrill and it ran short of that. The author is great with details and humor.

ARC Release Oct 2019: Christmas Angels by Nancy Naigle

Goodreads Blurb

Growing up, Liz Westmoreland dreamed of taking over her grandparents inn located in the small mountain town of Angels Creek only for it to be sold before she ever got the chance. While browsing the internet, she stumbles upon a listing for what looks to be the picturesque inn and it’s set to go to auction. Liz places a bid, and by a miracle, wins the auction. But when she gets there she finds the property in significant disrepair.

When Matt Hardy narrowly lost the inn and property that butted his land, he just hoped it wasn’t another city slicker coming to make matters worse after the previous owners gutted the place for an art gallery. But the minute he recognized the sweet, freckle-faced girl from his childhood and heard her plans to reopen the inn, he jumps at the chance to help his childhood crush restore a place where he made so many fond memories.

While working on repairs, Liz and Matt discover her grandmother’s collection of angels in one of the cabins. When the angels start mysteriously showing up all over the inn, she begins to look at them as reassurance—that restoring the inn is what she’s meant to do. But when an accident leaves Liz feeling like she made a mistake, will Matt—and the residents of Angels Creek—be able to show Liz that she’s found a home? And possibly true love as well?

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

This heartwarming story will melt your heart. A Christmas story that brings memories of the past to the present. Angels Creek is exactly where I want to live. A small town filled with loving, amazing, friendly and supportive neighbors. The magic of Christmas at its best. Liz was the happiest when her grandparents were alive and running Angels Rest, which she always dreamed of owning when she grew up. That dream quickly evaporated, when her grandparents sold it. A chance of a lifetime showed up that Angels Rest was being auctioned and she didn’t care of the current status of the home, but she hoped her dream would come true. The chemistry between Liz and Matt was very adorable. I loved how they played snow bowl “which I never heard of and seriously want to play”, they made a snowman and snow angel. I loved how they took advantage of Winter and what fun games and activities you can do during Christmas. Nancy once again gave us a story that gives us hope, love, inspiration and Christmas magic. Definitely, a future Hallmark movie that will bring joy to everyone.

Me when I used App to look like Charlie Minx

If you haven’t read NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, then you serious need to pick it up. AMC just aired the first season of NOS4A2 and I loved it. In June, at Bookcon, AMC had a booth, where everyone can take a picture to look like Charlie Minx and then we would get a candy cane and a gift. They were recording the event and you can see video below of me and my mom opening our gifts and me taking a selfie http://www.themill.com/portfolio/5034/nos4a2-%7C-behind-the-scenes

George Washington’s Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation (Little Books of Wisdom) by George Washington

Goodreads Blurb

Here are the 110 rules which George Washington copied into his early notebooks and lived by all his life–from such rules as Spit not in the fire to Sleep not when others speak.

My Review

This was a very interesting book filled with different morals and behavior from a long time passed. Some of the 110 rules we still follow today, but Washington would be very disappointed to see that our society has changed for the worst in manners. They were plenty of the rules that are not in use to today’s world and others we all have learned from a very young age. It’s a book that everyone should take the time to read, so we all could remember what life was back in the days and to remember we should all have manners towards family, friends and colleagues.

Author Biography

Born in 1732 into a Virginia planter family, he learned the morals, manners, and body of knowledge requisite for an 18th century Virginia gentleman.

He pursued two intertwined interests: military arts and western expansion. At 16 he helped survey Shenandoah lands for Thomas, Lord Fairfax. Commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, he fought the first skirmishes of what grew into the French and Indian War. The next year, as an aide to Gen. Edward Braddock, he escaped injury although four bullets ripped his coat and two horses were shot from under him.

From 1759 to the outbreak of the American Revolution, Washington managed his lands around Mount Vernon and served in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Married to a widow, Martha Dandridge Custis, he devoted himself to a busy and happy life. But like his fellow planters, Washington felt himself exploited by British merchants and hampered by British regulations. As the quarrel with the mother country grew acute, he moderately but firmly voiced his resistance to the restrictions.

When the Second Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia in May 1775, Washington, one of the Virginia delegates, was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. On July 3, 1775, at Cambridge, Massachusetts, he took command of his ill-trained troops and embarked upon a war that was to last six grueling years.

He realized early that the best strategy was to harass the British. He reported to Congress, “we should on all Occasions avoid a general Action, or put anything to the Risque, unless compelled by a necessity, into which we ought never to be drawn.” Ensuing battles saw him fall back slowly, then strike unexpectedly. Finally in 1781 with the aid of French allies–he forced the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.

Washington longed to retire to his fields at Mount Vernon. But he soon realized that the Nation under its Articles of Confederation was not functioning well, so he became a prime mover in the steps leading to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia in 1787. When the new Constitution was ratified, the Electoral College unanimously elected Washington President

He did not infringe upon the policy making powers that he felt the Constitution gave Congress. But the determination of foreign policy became preponderantly a Presidential concern. When the French Revolution led to a major war between France and England, Washington refused to accept entirely the recommendations of either his Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, who was pro-French, or his Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who was pro-British. Rather, he insisted upon a neutral course until the United States could grow stronger.

To his disappointment, two parties were developing by the end of his first term. Wearied of politics, feeling old, he retired at the end of his second. In his Farewell Address, he urged his countrymen to forswear excessive party spirit and geographical distinctions. In foreign affairs, he warned against long-term alliances.

Washington enjoyed less than three years of retirement at Mount Vernon, for he died of a throat infection December 14, 1799. For months the Nation mourned him

The Rancher’s Twins by Carol Ross

Goodreads Blurb

She’s not the country nanny he advertised for

But she could be perfect for him…

Jon Blackwell needs a woman ready to tackle the duties of a cattle ranch and two lively, take-no-prisoners twin girls. But ever since Lydia Newbury showed up at his six-generation Montana spread, the frazzled single father is rethinking, well, everything. The Philadelphia dazzler is a marvel. What he doesn’t know is the secret that has Lydia on the run…

My Review

A wonderful story with a great plot and amazing characters. Lydia has a past she is running from. In hopes of staying hidden, she becomes a nanny for two twins. She falls in love with the girls. Jon is a hot single cowboy. What more can you ask for? This was a fun story because it has romance, secrets and a surprise solution to Lydia’s troubles. Lydia is truly a hero. She did what she thought was right without thinking of the consequences. She loves to be helpful, caring and loving. Jon and Lydia are made for each other. A great heartwarming story. I rated 4 out of 5 stars.

Author Biography

USA Today and national bestselling author Carol Ross grew up in small-town America right between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains, in a place where you can go deep sea fishing in the morning and then hit the ski slopes the same afternoon. The daughter of free-range parents, she developed a love of adventure and the outdoors at a very early age. She’s grateful for the “research material” that every questionable decision, adrenaline-charged misstep, and near-death experience has provided.
