Publication date: January 24, 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Sports

Synopsis:

After a public and very messy divorce nearly drained his bank account, Cole Howard is too focused on trying to save his basketball career to even think about shooting his shot outside of the arena, especially with women like his uptight neighbor, Bella Barnes. Despite being beautiful and intelligent, she’s no stranger to drama, one thing he’s desperate to avoid.

His only escape is an online culinary covert persona he uses to share his passion for all things food with a stranger who’s only interested in what he can do in the kitchen and not on the court.

After having a problematic entanglement with a very famous and still married celebrity aired out on a nationally syndicated radio show, being unceremoniously fired, and moving in with her sister, Bellamy Barnes is too focused on trying to get her life back together to even think about getting herself entangled with another emotionally unavailable man. This especially includes men like her sister’s annoying neighbor, Cole Howard.

Despite being gorgeous and charming– though she wishes he would stop calling her Bella because he knows she hates it—he’s exactly the kind of rich, thinks-he’s-God’s-gift to women player (on and off the court) she’d spent her entire life avoiding.

Her only refuge is visually indulging in the culinary masterpieces cooked up by her online crush and confidante.

Cole and Bellamy have sworn off love IRL but on Beyoncé’s internet, cupid plays by a different set of rules.

Review: Terry’s Crew by Terry Crew

Goodreads Blurb

Young Terry Crews has a Big Dream Plan: He wants to become a MULTIHYPHENATE. That means he wants to be an artist. And a football player. And a musician. And maybe a NASA scientist, too! OK, maybe it’s ambitious, but his parents worked hard so he could go to a new school—Rock City Academy, a prestigious institution (read: rich kids go there) where he’s sure he can make his mark at the talent show. He plans an elaborate performance with his new friends, Rani, a passionate engineer, and Xander, a shy kid with a head like an encyclopedia.

Along the way, Terry’s plan is threatened by his grades, which slip below Mom-and-Dad-approved levels, as well as the schemes of the school’s football star, Rick, who won’t stop until Terry quits the talent show altogether. No matter what challenges he faces, though, Terry knows that he always has his crew to back him up.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars

A fantastic comic novel that takes us back to when Terry was younger. Terry has not changed a bit, always looking for ways to make a difference, and cares about others. We get a glimpse into Terry’s childhood in this comic; he was bullied, but that never stopped him from dreaming big and achieving his goals. While he was scared of dealing with bullies, his big heart allowed him to convince those bullies that their actions were wrong. He never judged anyone but saw the good people have regardless of the life they lived.

Two kingdoms: one of shadows, and one of blood.

Damien Chaos was a devil of his own making, and yet, somehow he found himself agreeing to a deal with Kira Cain instead of the other way around. She’d manipulated him into a position where the only solution was to do exactly as she wanted.

Shadow was his, but the cost was almost more than he could stand.

Kira Cain was going to be his wife, and the arranged marriage would put her at his side as his queen and equal.

The only problem was Damien couldn’t control her, and she already had Aeron and Kaito wrapped around her little finger. Things may not be going as planned, but there was no way he’d let anyone else f*cking touch her.

Dante would suffer for putting her in danger, and this time Damien wasn’t going to let it slide.

Lisa Jewell Book Signing

Harlan Coben in conversation with Lisa Jewell

In August, Barnes and Noble in Paramus, NJ, hosted a book event featuring Harlan Coben in conversation with Lisa Jewell. My last in-person book event at B&N was with Lisa during her book release of The Family Upstairs. The book was part of the B&N Book Club. After so many events were canceled due to COVID, it is great to see a good turnout this year. It is recommended that you read The Family Upstairs before continuing with The Family Remains. Lisa is one of my favorite psychological thriller authors that write captivating stories with real-life issues that readers can relate to.

Goodreads Blurb

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell comes an
intricate and affecting novel about twisted marriages, fractured families, and
deadly obsessions in this standalone sequel to The Family Upstairs.

Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to
the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for
examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three
people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago.

Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—news that her husband, Michael, has
been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an
intruder, and the French police need her to come urgently to answer questions
about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.

After fleeing London thirty years ago in the wake of a horrific tragedy,
Lucy Lamb is finally coming home. While she settles in with her children and is
just about to purchase their first-ever house, her brother takes off to find
the boy from their shared past whose memory haunts their present.

As they all race to discover answers to these convoluted mysteries, they
will come to find that they’re connected in ways they could have never
imagined.

In this masterful standalone sequel to her haunting New York Times bestseller, The
Family Upstairs
, Lisa Jewell proves she is writing at the height of her
powers with another jaw-dropping, intricate, and affecting novel about the
lengths we will go to protect the ones we love and uncover the truth.

Author Biography

Her first novel, Ralph’s Party, was the best-selling debut novel of 1999.
Since then she has written another twenty novels, most recently a number of
dark psychological thrillers, including The Girls, Then She Was Gone, The
Family Upstairs, and The Night She Disappeared.

Lisa is a New York Times and Sunday Times number one bestselling author who
has been published worldwide in over twenty-five languages. She lives in north
London with her husband, two teenage daughters, and the best dog in the world.

Review: Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough

Goodreads Blurb

In this twisty, mind-bending thriller from the bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes, Emma Averell worries that her crippling insomnia is a sign that she’s slowly going insane—like the mother she’s worked so hard to leave in her past.

Emma Averell loves her life—her high-powered legal career, her two beautiful children, and her wonderful stay-at-home husband—but it wasn’t always so perfect. When she was just five years old, Emma and her older sister went into foster care because of a horrific incident with their mother. Her sister can remember a time when their mother was loving and “normal,” but Emma can only remember her as one thing—a monster. And that monster emerged right around their mother’s fortieth birthday, the same age Emma is approaching now.

Emma desperately wants to keep her successful life separate from her past, so she has always hidden her childhood trauma. But then she’s unable to sleep, and now losing time during the day, also one of the first symptoms her mother showed. Is the madness in her blood, just as her mother predicted? Could she end up hurting her family in her foggy, frenetic state? Or is she truly beginning to lose her mind?

My Review: Rated 3 out of 5 Stars

A mind-blowing thriller that will have you frightened of your fortieth birthday. Turning forty for many does seem life-changing, especially for women. In this thriller novel, I found myself frightened of turning forty, worried about insomnia, crazy thoughts, and loss of time, and seeing my life go upside down without a clear ending. The dreaded countdown had me just as insane as the character.

I wanted the day to arrive as much as Emma dreaded her birthday’s arrival. This psychological thriller has the reader thinking the main character Emma, is going mad just like her mother: but the story flips around, and the unexpected dread that someone is causing all her torture becomes a reality. This story foresaw the future at the time Emma’s mother went mad and how that future becomes the present for Emma. Two visions drove the characters mad because of the darkness they revealed. Will you survive your fortieth birthday?
