Review: Kensie’s Treasures by J.M. Schneider

Book Blurb

Kensie Prescott’s life-long study of infamous pirate Cyrus Buckwell takes an exciting turn when new information about his theft of a valuable jeweled headdress from the Royal Family, is unearthed centuries after it disappeared when Buckwell’s ship was lost in a storm. Even though her colleagues think she’s crazy, Kensie is convinced she knows where to find it, and when her university won’t support an expedition, she sets out to the Caribbean on her own to claim the treasure.

The captain of the dive boat she hires, Julian Burke, is a roguishly handsome but uncouth man. After only a short time together, she recognizes his sensitive and intelligent nature and is unable to deny her feelings for him. As they draw closer to the treasure, Burke and Kensie must defend themselves from shady characters who wish to claim it for themselves.

Kensie came down to find one treasure, but now she sees another that is equally valuable. Can she claim both?

Available NOW in e-book format on AmazonBarnes & NobleSmashwordsApple, and Google Play!

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

If you love treasure hunts, then you will surely love this story. You have Kensie going on a hunt for treasure, what she doesn’t realize is that she will also find love. Love has been very difficult for this higher education professor. I was so excited that Kensie goes to Puerto Rico to get on a cruise. That is where I was born, so I always enjoy when P.R. makes it into a book. Kensie needs to find a scuba diver who will take her to the location that she believes she will find the hidden treasure. She finds Captain Julian Burke who’s ship isn’t in the best condition, but is the only one willing to take her. Kensie and Julian have a magnetic attraction towards each other right away.

This story ends up getting better when you have thug pirates, kind of, who seek the same thing that Kensie has been dreaming of finding forever. This treasure hunt turns into an action pack thriller. Will Kensie and Julian survive the attacks? Well, I will say this, they are an excellent team together. Kensie is a strong woman who will fight to keep the treasure she worked so hard to find and her loved ones saved. I loved that she was the main character with her superhuman kickass moves. She knows what needs to be done in order to survive. You will definitely be surprised who wanted the treasure as much as Kensie did.

Overall, the story has a treasure hunt, love story, bad guys with some fight for your life moments. I loved that the book kept my interest throughout the book. The sex scenes brought some added sazon to the story. Great plot with some excellent characters. You can tell that the author but a lot of work in his first book. Check out this great mix of suspense, thriller and romance.

Book Mail: The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

I am super excited to read this book. Alex’s first book was The Silent Patient. A thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. It’s a book I always recommend when someone is looking for a good book. I hope The Maidens will be just as amazing.

Goodreads Blurb

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” (Publishers Weekly).

Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek Tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike—particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.

Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?

When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything—including her own life.

My Review: Rated 4 out of 5 stars

A wonderful book for children who are interested in learning more about Chemistry and the fabulous ladies that contributed to the discovery of Chemistry with their rigorous experiments. I was so happy to read a book that shared stories about these amazing women who have contributed to scientific discoveries. When you read books about science, men are primarily the scientist and the ones who are being congratulated for their discoveries. This book is perfect for young girls to get inspired to join the world of Science and to make a difference.

This book includes 5 ladies that contributed to scientific discoveries in Chemistry. I was happily surprised that two women brought DNA to life. Rosalind Franklin was able to take images of what DNA looks like. Then Ada Yonath discovered that our bodies create a copy of DNA. I was fascinated to hear that two ladies were able to give us more details on our DNA. This book provides children with a beginners knowledge of Chemistry. It goes over the Periodic Table and has vocabularies throughout the book. They also included a glossary at the end of the book. The story is very easy for children to understand and the illustrations are colorful and fun. Great book to learn more about Chemistry.

ARC Review: The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

Goodreads Blurb

Hailed as breathtakingly suspenseful, Jean Hanff Korelitz’s The Plot is a propulsive read about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it.

Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written–let alone published–anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then . . . he hears the plot.

Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parker’s first novel: but it never comes. When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like that–a story that absolutely needs to be told.

In a few short years, all of Evan Parker’s predictions have come true, but Jake is the author enjoying the wave. He is wealthy, famous, praised and read all over the world. But at the height of his glorious new life, an e-mail arrives, the first salvo in a terrifying, anonymous campaign: You are a thief, it says.

As Jake struggles to understand his antagonist and hide the truth from his readers and his publishers, he begins to learn more about his late student, and what he discovers both amazes and terrifies him. Who was Evan Parker, and how did he get the idea for his “sure thing” of a novel? What is the real story behind the plot, and who stole it from whom?

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

A mind blowing suspenseful thriller until the very end. Imagine being a writer and knowing someone has an amazing plot that will make that story the number 1 book of the year. If you had the opportunity to steal the plot, would you do it?

Well Jacob found himself in that exact situation. The original author passed away and he thought it was a brilliant idea to steal a plot that was never his. This plot was an unimaginable story between a mother and daughter, with a plot twist that will blow your mind. Can a fictional story really be real? Someone’s secret is out in the world without the permission of that particular person, who went above and beyond to bury a secret. What made this story even more frightening is that the plot twist for Jacob’s character is even more unnerving.

After Jacob wrote the Crib he starts receiving email messages and then tweets that are accusing him of stealing the plot. The readers truly go through this rollercoaster ride of fear with Jacob and with the unknown threat that will ruin his career forever. You can feel his desperation and fear as the story unravels. This story was so thrilling, since Jacob goes in search of the person that is threatening him. Those moments of him going around like Nancy Drew had my hairs standing up. He lied in order to seek the truth. He gets away with searching for this person without too much trouble. Sometimes what you’re looking for it’s right under your eyes,. Eventually, Jacob realizes that the plot twist of his plot was actually a real life story. Will he locate the perpetrator in time before the world knows what he stole? Who will be one step ahead?

The story started a little slow, but trust me you will not be able to put the book down. This will be one of the top thrillers this year.

Book Mail: A Bright Ray of Darkness by Ethan Hawke

Goodreads Blurb

The first novel in nearly twenty years from the acclaimed actor/writer/director is a book about art and love, fame and heartbreak–a blistering story of a young man making his Broadway debut in Henry IV just as his marriage implodes.

A bracing meditation on fame and celebrity, and the redemptive, healing power of art; a portrait of the ravages of disappointment and divorce; a poignant consideration of the rites of fatherhood and manhood; a novel soaked in rage and sex, longing and despair; and a passionate love letter to the world of theater, A Bright Ray of Darkness showcases Ethan Hawke’s gifts as a novelist as never before.

Hawke’s narrator is a young man in torment, disgusted with himself after the collapse of his marriage, still half-hoping for a reconciliation that would allow him to forgive himself and move on as he clumsily, and sometimes hilariously, tries to manage the wreckage of his personal life with whiskey and sex. What saves him is theater: in particular, the challenge of performing the role of Hotspur in a production of Henry IV under the leadership of a brilliant director, helmed by one of the most electrifying–and narcissistic–Falstaff’s of all time. Searing, raw, and utterly transfixing, A Bright Ray of Darkness is a novel about shame and beauty and faith, and the moral power of art.

Author Biography

Ethan Green Hawke is a four-time Academy Award-nominated American actor, writer and film director.

In 1988, Hawke was cast in a role in director Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society; the film’s success was considered Hawke’s breakthrough. He left school and appeared in A Midnight Clear, Alive, Reality Bites, Before Sunrise, Gattaca, The Newton Boys, Great Expectations, and many other movies. In 2001, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Training Day. Hawke directed Chelsea Walls and has written two novels, The Hottest State (in 1996) and Ash Wednesday (in 2002). In 2005, he received his first screenwriting Oscar nomination for co-writing the 2004 film, Before Sunset (a sequel to Before Sunrise). From October 2006 through May 2007, he was in The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard at Lincoln Center in New York, playing Mikhail Bakunin. For this performance, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
