Continuation of Comic Con 2019

Had another great time at Comic Con. I was able to meet Joe hill, Lorraine Cink, Frank Miller and Thomas Wheeler. Sat in a panel for TOR books and got to see upcoming novels. The awesome part is picking up ARC copies of upcoming books. Wasn’t able to get the Hello Kitty Funko POP at Comic Con since it sold out, but my brother was able to find me one online. It’s super cute! Looking forward to next year.

The Testaments (Handmaid’s Tale #2) by Margaret Atwood

Goodreads Blurb

In this brilliant sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalized readers for decades.

When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her–freedom, prison or death.

With The Testaments, the wait is over.

Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story more than fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.

“Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.” –Margaret Atwood

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

A sequel to remember. A story filled with archaic views, beliefs and rules. The elite men have all the power in Gilead, while women either are the Wife, an Aunt, a Martha or a Handmaid. The government built of men came up with the bright idea of handmaids in order for them to have children. Another form of nicely saying they are prostitutes, since they are passed around from home to home. Everyone has a place in Gilead as long as you follow through with your duty or death is upon you. The story was told in three different points of views that nicely closed the unfinished ending to The Handmaids Tale. Question about the infertility issues and was Nicole and Agnes daughter of Offred? Will keep you thinking, since it seems those answers will stay with Margaret Atwood. Violence was a huge part in both these books. The people might follow gods believes but they truly don’t see how execution of your sister’s or brother’s is proper. What upsets me the most about this book is how women are viewed as only a vessel to carry a baby and nothing else is needed from that empty vessel after. We are deemed slaves, dumb, powerless, worthless while men are free to be themselves. At the end girl power was shining bright because they weren’t as useless as they might have believed. Being one step ahead and having a well set plan will set you free. I’m glad society has changed from those many centuries women fought for their rights, but we unfortunately today need to still fight for our women rights and equality. Don’t let the mistakes from the past repeat themselves, stand up for what is right.

AUTHOR BIO:

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

Darktown by Thomas Mullen

Goodreads Blurb

Responding from pressure on high, the Atlanta police department is forced to hire its first black officers in 1948. The newly minted policemen are met with deep hostility by their white peers and their authority is limited: They can’t arrest white suspects; they can’t drive a squad car; they can’t even use the police headquarters and must instead operate out of the basement of a gym.

When a black woman who was last seen in a car driven by a white man turns up fatally beaten, no one seems to care except for Boggs and Smith, two black cops from vastly different backgrounds. Pressured from all sides, they will risk their jobs, the trust the community has put in them, and even their own safety to investigate her death. Their efforts bring them up against an old-school cop, Dunlow, who has long run the neighborhood like his own, and Dunlow’s young partner, Rakestraw, a young progressive who may or may not be willing to make allies across color lines.

My Review : Rated 5 out of 5 stars

As I read, I was brought to a time not too long ago. I felt each hatred word, anger, segregation, abuse and violence as if I was Boggs himself. I was culture shocked to have read a book that pains me to believe that humanity was once like this story and that unfortunately has not changed, since we still have racism by race, age, gender, disability and religion still today. As I read, I was brought to a war zone between African American cops and white cops. Both are in society for the same cause to protect their community, while working with different tactics and resources. I was so angry that Dunlow abused innocent people just for the fun of it. What utterly shocked me was that his partner Rakestraw, would stand there watching innocent people get hurt and not stand up and help them. It was a tough read, since the “N” word was almost in every sentence. It really hurts to have to hear someone talk down at you, even though you are a cop just like them. This book will torture you from the very beginning until the very end. Boggs was amazing and I was happy that he stood up and fought to find the killer of the young black lady that no one cared to investigate her murder, while he had to jump through obstacles, which could have caused his life or job. Please pick this book up and ride this roller coaster until the end.
