The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas

Goodreads Blurb

The Darkest Corners is a psychological thriller about the lies little girls tell, and the deadly truths those lies become.

There are ghosts around every corner in Fayette, Pennsylvania. Tessa left when she was nine and has been trying ever since not to think about it after what happened there that last summer. Memories of things so dark will burn themselves into your mind if you let them.

Callie never left. She moved to another house, so she doesn’t have to walk those same halls, but then Callie always was the stronger one. She can handle staring into the faces of her demons—and if she parties hard enough, maybe one day they’ll disappear for good.

Tessa and Callie have never talked about what they saw that night. After the trial, Callie drifted and Tessa moved, and childhood friends just have a way of losing touch.

But ever since she left, Tessa has had questions. Things have never quite added up. And now she has to go back to Fayette—to Wyatt Stokes, sitting on death row; to Lori Cawley, Callie’s dead cousin; and to the one other person who may be hiding the truth.

Only the closer Tessa gets to the truth, the closer she gets to a killer—and this time, it won’t be so easy to run away.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I don’t know where to start. I couldn’t put this book down. I still cannot believe the darkest secrets that Tessa’s family was hiding. As I read, I felt like I was being sucked through a black whole of no return. It was dark, scary and friendly all at the same time. As I read I kept on thinking of certain characters, of the heartless predator, and feel terrible to have such thoughts of innocent victims. I loved Tessa’s character. She never gave up and was able to put together the pieces of the puzzle, while risking everything. Won’t share what exactly happened in the story so that it won’t get spoiled, but I will tell you, I was punching my book to death when the truth unraveled.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Blurb

The Handmaid’s Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.

The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment’s calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid’s Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best.

My Review: Rated 5 out of 5 stars

I’m beyond speechless. The story is so captivating. Margaret wrote this book a little over 30 years ago and gave us a story that you’ll never forget. The plot is frightening and menacing. This futuristic story will leave you fighting for women rights. I couldn’t possibly imagine my life and the right to be me, be taken away from me. To lose your job, husband, child and all personal belongings and have to get pregnant in order to survive, while giving up all rights to that baby is horrifying. Love no longer exist, the right to speak and roam free, taken away. The character creation was superb. Each character has a proper place in the story. Margaret is a true story teller that paints each scene for you to feel like you are living in this hell. The punishments are cruel and harsh. A lesson needs to be learned from every hanging for breaking the rules. What frightens me about this book is how this story can easily become a reality. Our past usually repeats it’s self. Women in this current century still are fighting for equality among men. Men still have the ball in their court. Power always rises over fairness and equality. I can’t wait to read the next book to see if this terrible government will be destroyed.

Downton Abbey Movie and New Books

I had such a wonderful time watching the Downton Abbey movie. It was everything I could have asked for. It gave each character hope, love and a future. He left the story opened for a continuation. I was left with happy tears 🙂 I need to go see it again.

I picked up two books and two magazines at B&N that talk about the film and the full show.

Goodreads Blurb

Downton Abbey set a new standard, and it’s probable that in 20 or 50 years critics will look back and say that this was period drama at its very best, often imitated but never bettered.” —The Daily Mail

Since the moment we first entered Downton Abbey in 1912, we have been swept away by Julian Fellowes’s evocative world of romance, intrigue, drama and tradition. Now, in 1925, as Downton Abbey prepares to close its doors for the final time, Jessica Fellowes leads us through the house and estate, reliving the iconic moments of the wonderfully aristocratic Crawley family and their servants as they navigate the emerging modern age.

Travelling from Great Hall to servants’ hall, bedroom to boot room, we glimpse as we go Matthew and Isobel Crawley arriving for the first time, the death of Kemal Pamuk, Cora’s tragic miscarriage, Edith’s affair with Michael Gregson, Mary’s new haircut, Thomas and O’Brien’s scheming, Anna and Bates’s troubles with the law, and Carson’s marriage to Mrs Hughes.

Alongside are in-depth interviews with the cast, who have worked on the show for six years and know it so well, as well as a complete episode guide for the first five seasons and a teaser for the sixth. Packed full of stunning location shots and stills from all six seasons of the show including exclusive behind-the-scenes photography, this celebratory book is the ultimate gift for Downton Abbey fans the world over.

Downton Abbey: The Official Film Companion is a stunning memento, bringing the world and the characters of our favorite fictional country house to life. Featuring spectacular photographs from the production, interviews with the cast and crew, and a look into the historical and geographical backdrop of the film, this official guide to the Downton Abbey film is made to be treasured and loved by fans across the globe.

The film revolves around the King and Queen making an official visit to Downton in 1927, and not only sees the return of all the main cast from the final television series, but also introduces some great British actors to the world of Downton, as we meet the royal family and their retinue. The accompanying book is lavishly illustrated with stunning shots from both behind and in front of the camera, which capture some wonderful off-guard moments during filming, as well as the original costume illustrations.
